Cost of a Healthy Eating for a dinner: Meal in a box from restaurant - avg. $6/person Meal in a box from store (Pasta, flavor mix, and adding 1lb. of meat) - Cost of box - $1.68, Meat - around $3.40 = $5.08 - Not a bad price, but consider: According to box, that is 5 servings, one cup each. Small family w/ young kids, maybe enough. Bigger family or older kids... maybe not, so double recipe = $10.16. The ingredients include processed flour, sugar, extra gluten, hydrogenated oil (very unhealthy), and several colors. Skillet Lasagna - made in pressure cooker or skillet. Box of whole grain pasta - about $1.30. Jar of organic spaghetti sauce - $2.68. One pound ground beef - $3.40. Cream cheese - avg. $2. When we make it for a family with three teenagers, everyone is filled. Total Cost - $9.38. Maybe add a loaf of freshly milled flour bread - $1.62. - Total $11. Less than $1 more & you know whats in it. No bread, actually cheaper than doubling the box meal. So, you can do real food dinners for around the same cost as the box ones. Compared to eating out, big savings. The point of meals in a box is to save time, but the skillet lasagna recipe is on the table in 15 minutes if done in a pressure cooker, and only uses one pan! Quick, healthy, real, delicious, and cost effective!
