Cost to drive a car: I personally rarely lend my car now, however I know many young car owners frequently run into problems with car maintenance/repair expenses. It is hard to know how much it cost for you to drive. It is important to realize that maintenance and depreciation of a vehicle is a huge factor contributing to the cost of driving a vehicle. I encourage young drivers to set aside extra $ every time they pump gas into their vehicles. Every time I borrow, say a truck, I try to fill it up around 1.5-2X the amount of gas that I use (to me it’s cheaper to borrow trucks since I rarely need one). Also it keeps the owner happy, and more than willing to lend it again. Whenever you give rides, or ask for a ride, just remember that it refueling the gas you used is only a fraction cost. If it’s a new car, it will depreciate faster. If it’s an older car, owner will soon run into heavy repair cost and maintenance. What do you all think about my 1.5x-2x rule? Every vehicle is very different, but some general info found on this link. exchange.aaa/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/your-driving-costs-2013.pdf
