Costa Concordia Floated for Final Voyage to Scrapyard GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy (WGGB) — The downed cruise ship Costa Concordia has been lifted off the of the seabed and is now ready to make its final journey. The ship ran aground two and a half years ago in a coral reef of the coast of Giglio Island, leaving 32 people dead. Ever since then, engineers have been working to find the best and safest way to remove the ship from the delicate environment. The main obstacle is the environmental disaster that would ensue if the ship, which is twice the size of the Titanic, were to break apart. The $1 billion dollar project involved connecting massive containers to each side of the ship, tilting it upright, and then filling those containers with air in order to raise the ship just six feet off of the seabed. That final enormous step of the process was completed Monday. Now, the ship will slowly be towed four hours away to a ship yard on the other side of Italy, where it will be scrapped.
