Cougar mistakes in the third quarter allowed Brentwood to blow open a close game as the Bruins beat Dickson County 45-25 to get their first win of the season Friday night in Dickson County Stadium. Both teams stand at 1-4 overall while the Cougars fall to 0-2 in District 11-AAA. Brentwood led by a touchdown at the half but turned a Cougar fumble into a touchdown and returned an interception for a score in a three-touchdown burst that put the game out of reach. After the Bruins capped the opening drive with a 27-yard field goal, sophomore Jacob Murphree got his first start at quarterback for the Cougars and led their opening drive to the end zone with a 23-yard slant to Cayce Daniel for a 7-3 lead. Jacob Williams followed with a 29-yard field goal for a 10-3 Cougar edge early in the second period. But the Brentwood running game began to find traction as Jordan Von Tagen tied the game on a two-yard score then John Robertson put Brentwood ahead 17-10 with a 24-yard touchdown before intermission. The Cougars opened the second half with a drive deep into Bruin territory before a fumble stopped the effort. Brentwood converted the turnover into points when Robertson capped the drive with a 15-yard run. On the next possession, Asher Melton intercepted Murphree and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown. After another stop, Brentwood capped the three-touchdown third period with a 21-yard run by quarterback Carson Croy to lead 38-10. Dickson County battled back with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Murphree. He connected with Enoch Williams for a 22-yard score then the duo hooked up for the two-point conversion. Murphree followed with a 41-yard score to Kincaid Lewis as DCHS trailed 38-25. But after a pooch kickoff went out of bounds, the Bruins sealed the victory with Robertsons third touchdown on a 17-yard run for the 45-25 victory. The Cougars hope to end a four-game skid when they host Wilson Central for homecoming Friday night in their last non-district game of the season. Brentwood hosts 4-1 Oakland this week.
