Cougars Open Up Season At Home On The Loop KINMUNDY - The South Central Cougars open up the fall baseball season with a home game against Altamont today at 4:15. Both teams ran through the regular season schedule in the National Trail Conference a year ago with just one loss and were co-champions before South Central won the tournament title. Coach Curt Jones returns a ton of power from last year’s team which will be led by Noah Powless. The strong right-hander had an amazing summer for Vandalia Post 95 senior legion and will be the leader in the lineup. Dylan Smith will be another bat near the top of the order that should have a solid season. Consistent at the plate, Smith is a double’s machine and showed some signs of driving the baseball out of the park both during the Spring, as well as during the summer for Salem Post 128 Senior Legion. Smith could also see some innings on the mound. Coach Jones will have to find someone to pick up the slack on the mound losing starters Tyler Ross and Kyle Bray, but some of the young arms threw well in their limited action last year. South Central will return staff ace Dylen Peters who also had a solid summer for Vandalia Post 95. Control will be his focus this year, as the right-hander took a small step back during the Spring with his command. One thing is for sure, if he throws strikes, Peters will be one of the dominant pitcher featured by the NTC. One of those up and coming athletes is Gavin Ratermann. Playing mostly in the outfield, but also filling in around the infield, the right hander could be the lighting rod near the top of the order that will allow the thumpers in the middle to drive in runs. Ratermann also helped out on the mound and was solid in limited innings. As always, the Cougars defense will go a long way in determining how they finish up this season. And with only 13 games on the schedule in addition to the NTC Tournament at the end of the Fall, South Central can ill-afford to have lapses defensively as they did in the Spring. That being said, the Cougars still won another regional title and made a deep run before being eliminated in the Sectional Tournament. You can listen to the South Central v. Altamont game this afternoon starting at 4:15 trivillageloop as former Cougar Toby Gullion brings you the play-by-play. trivillageloop/
