Could You have ever imagined this, O God? When You came to the world in your Son in the dark of a night in Bethlehem, did You foresee what we would do with that day? The holy name of Jesus has become the guilt-laden tactic of every opportunist, including a great number who call themselves Christians. In the name of Jesus, give! In the name of Jesus, buy! In the name of Jesus, support! In the name of Jesus, pledge! In the name of Jesus, empty your pockets to fill your life! . . . and what is gained? Where is the Silent Night in all of this? Where is the awe? Where is the knee-bending honor of your Gift? Where is the soul-humbling gratitude? Must the current standard of true worship be based on our capacity to buy and pay for something? Or, did You imagine more, Lord God? Oh, I know that all the commerce means jobs and jobs mean more opportunity for your people, God, but I still have to wonder where the fine-line is between our need to walk in the Hope of Your Heart and our need to meet everyone elses expectations. What did You mean when the only ones to hear the Angels and see Him in the manger were Shepherds in the fields? What clues might we glean from Wise People journeying from afar following a Star? What light might You shed on our walking the way today towards Good News? In the midst of our messiness, our greed, our troubled behaviors towards each other, our power-trips, and the economic disparities in the world, Come, Lord Jesus, Come . . . as only God might imagine. Come and re-focus our hearts, our souls, and our living to Gods intentional choice to arrive in a stable where few would notice, even as creation begins to be restored. Come and simplify what we make difficult, Save what we make unattainable, Love what we believe to be untouchable, and Lift Up those upon whom we walk to get to You. Come, Lord Jesus, Come, as only God might imagine . . . and foresee for Creations future. Blessings on the continuing Advent journey.
