Could electricity price spikes recur? Analyst says yes Here’s an additional question that’s probably on a lot of people’s minds: Could an electricity price spike happen again? “Yes,” said Steve Cantore, president of Utility Rates Analysts Inc., a firm based in Camp Hill that advises companies on utility contracts. Power usage peaks at two times of year: During the coldest winter days and the hottest summer ones. The five hottest days last summer all had more power consumption than the peaks in January that drove the recent price spikes, he said. Supply matters, too, but if demand unexpectedly soars this summer, prices could follow. Jennifer Kocher, spokeswoman for the state Public Utility Commission, said it’s too early to tell whether January’s spikes were a true anomaly or not. It’s possible they were due to a unique confluence of events, or they could signal a longer-term change in how the market functions, she said. Whatever the case, Cantore reiterated his disapproval of consumers choosing variable rates.
