Could it be that she has failed long before all of this happens, I mean before she hit her son? Or, if we accept the interpretation of the taxi driver in fact being the grim reaper, could it be that the promise she made to death was "to come back" (he asks her "you will come back? " and she replies "yes... I promise" ) . There is the promise she makes to Death and then she breaks it by NOT coming back. So we may assume that she manages to break the circle, but only to be punished over again. (The myth of Aeolus )
