Could you walk the 30 miles from Montpelier to Burlington carrying a rifle, pack, food and ammunition on dusty dirt roads in 90 degree heat? That is what the Old Vermont Brigade did this day 30 years ago in one of the great marches in American military history. They started in darkness, heading towards Gettysburg on the Baltimore and Gettysburg Turnpike. At noon they had a brief halt and then back into ranks moving towards the battle. Farm families came out with buckets of water as no stops could be made. From Little Round Top troops could see a column of troops heading towards Gettysburg. Were they Union or Rebels they asked? And then a great cheer was heard from the Union lines which Robert E Lee heard...the banners of the 6th Corps were seen. By 6pm Vermonters were soaking their feet in Rock Creek just outside Gettysburg. The 6th Corps, lead by the Old Vermont Brigade, had arrived at Gettysburg
