Council Chairman Walker and I issued the following press release applauding Gov. Cuomos action today on the fracking issue: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE Niagara Falls Officials United In Opposition to Fracking Mayor, Council Chairman voice agreement with Cuomo Administration’s move to ban hydraulic fracturing Niagara Falls –Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster and City Council Chairman Charles Walker issued statements on Wednesday applauding New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to ban the natural gas extraction technique known as “hydraulic fracturing,” “hydrofracking,” or simply “fracking,” for short. Cuomo’s decision followed a report from the New York State Department of Health that concluded health risks and potential legal hurdles would outweigh fracking’s purported economic benefits. The City Council unanimously passed an ordinance in March 2012 banning the practice in the city of Niagara Falls, as well as the treatment, storage, transfer, and disposal of fracking wastewater in the city’s wastewater treatment plant, one of only two locations in Western New York said to be capable of treating the material. Fracking wastewater is a mix of water, sand, and potentially unsafe chemicals which is used to blast through layers of underground rock in order to access natural gas deposits. “This is the right policy for New York and for Niagara Falls,” said Council Chairman Walker. “Governor Cuomo realizes that the health and safety of our state can’t be measured in dollars.” “I want to thank Governor Cuomo for having the courage to do the right thing, not only for this generation, but for future generations of New Yorkers,” said Mayor Dyster. “No natural resource is as important to our future as clean, pure water.”
