Council of Canadians question: In view of the fact that the United Nations has declared water to be a human right, how would you address this right in your capacity as Mayor/Councillor vis-a-vis the proposed Ajax mine, public drinking fountains, metered water, pollution through cosmetic pesticide use, or any other capacity? My answer: Water needs to be recognized and protected as the valuable resource that it is. Quality water infrastructure and protection and enhancement of natural water resources is critical to our economy, human health, and environmental well-being. Concerning water metres – they create a monetary value for water that recognizes its scarcity and this is a good thing. Concerning pollution through cosmetic pesticide use – there are two approaches – working to ensure that pollutants don’t enter our water systems in an effort to protect our environment to the best of our ability and that we continue to apply the highest standards to the cleaning and protection to domestic water system to protect human health. Ajax mine – the City needs to be actively involved in the protection from all industry that may have an impact on the water supply of its citizens. There needs to be a heightened level of protection that goes beyond the standards set by senior governments when industry is proposed within watersheds of population centres such as Kamloops. Important to error on the side of caution and protection of human health. #Kampaign2014
