Council update. Sinn Fein councillors looked for the maximum - TopicsExpress

Council update. Sinn Fein councillors looked for the maximum allowed 15 percent reduction of the property tax at yesterdays council meeting. It is party policy to seek such a reduction. This was met with huge resistance by other councillors. its fairy tale economics to put a tax on peoples homes when 100,000s people cant meet their mortgage repayments. This tax along with many other charges has in some cases taken the food out of childrens mouths. The property tax does not take into account a persons income or ability to pay. Its solely based on the value of the home. The government led people to believe the tax would provide extra services which was a blatant lie. Before the property tax councils were funding directly from central government through taxes such as PAYE , VAT ect. The property tax has now replaced this money so I asked at the meeting where has that money gone ? Conclusion was we stood our ground under huge pressure from all sides but the council voted to freeze the rate for next year. We will take the battle to the government from within local Authorities, Leinster House or the Seanad. Enough is enough.
