Councillor David Holland Reports; A new state-of-the-art health centre has finally opened in Mexborough three years after funding for a ‘super surgery’ was cut. The Mexborough Integrated Health Centre has now been opened on the site of the old Highwoods Road fire station. Centre manager Lisa Ripley said: “There has been no new healthcare facility built for patients since the mid 1980s and the new concept and modern embracing integrated health care centre provides a model of multiple services with many NHS services provided all under one roof for some decades to come. “The derelict and burned down old fire station site has been rejuvenated.” It is estimated the project has cost in the region of £2 million and has been a joint venture between private backers and support from NHS Doncaster. More than 5,000 registered patients have access to the usual GP services along with counselling, smoking cessation and weight management. There is also a cardio-respiratory suite and a community meeting room. Labour leader Ed Miliband is due to visit the centre on Friday, October 18.
