Counting down the Memorable Moments of 2014: In July and August the most important international event of the year was the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014, where all the world’s top netball countries were represented. South Africa were drawn in the same pool as Australia, England, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Wales. Team South Africa did well in the pool matches, with decisive victories over Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Wales. In their match against third-ranked England, they finished six goals short, and the eventual gold medalists, Australia, beat the Proteas 64-40. The Proteas finished third in their pool and came up against perennial rivals, Malawi, in the play-off for fifth place. Malawi squeaked home 53-45, after an exciting ding-dong battle.
