County of Kauai said: HANAPEPE – Firefighters rescued a kite surfer in distress off Salt Pond Beach in Hanapepe Wednesday evening. Police Dispatch was notified of the incident at around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters from the Hanapepe station arrived to the scene to locate the kite surfer hanging onto his board, roughly 150 yards from shore. The surfer was attempting to swim to shore, but a strong ocean current and windy conditions made swimming extremely difficult, and the distressed surfer continued to drift further out. One firefighter initially paddled out on a rescue board, but low visibility and hazardous conditions were becoming an increasing concern, so a second firefighter paddled out to assist. Together, they were able to bring the distressed surfer safely to shore. Fire officials report that the two rescuers were met with applause from bystanders as they approached the beach. The kite surfer, age 56 of Las Vegas, reported to be in good condition and refused medical treatment. ###
