Courage personified NY Daily News 10/25/14 May a rattled city honor as heroes the health workers caring for New York’s first — we can hope only — Ebola patient, a fellow hero, Dr. Craig Spencer. Spencer had devoted a grueling month to treating Ebola sufferers under unimaginably difficult circumstances in Guinea. Dangerous circumstances, too. So far, 24 members of Doctors Without Borders, the group that took Spencer on as a volunteer, have contracted Ebola, 13 of them fatally. Now, all manner of staff at Bellevue — from waste disposal specialists to nurses and doctors — have stepped up to care for Spencer. While they are specially trained and wear protective gear, all have seen how easily things can go wrong. In an unnerving daily ritual, members of Bellevue’s brave cadre will encase themselves in impermeable jumpsuits, hoods, gloves, booties, goggles and masks, then peel the synthetic skin off at the end of every shift without touching any part of their own. According to the Health and Hospitals Corp. president, not a single staff member opted out of the duty. Similarly, an Emergency Medical Service ambulance crew answered the call, and others stand ready to do so if necessary. Every bit as selfless as the police officers and firefighters who risk their lives day after day in public service, New York’s exemplary front-line troops in the war against Ebola are doing God’s work. They have our admiration and prayers.
