Course 168 Speed 12 Wind 12 knots from the South East Temperature 14 degrees Celsius – 60 degrees Farenthingy Sky mostly cloudy Good morning from the good ship Carnival Miracle as we head to Canada. The guests are all in a fabulous mood and I think it is safe to say we had three perfect days in Alaska with the best weather so far this season. Do you remember the guest who at the start of the cruise complained to me about my “poo” jokes on the morning show ? Well she has since then written a 4 page letter ( by hand ) addressed to the Captain and I about the “ serious lack of family values and Christianity on the ship.” Last night I spent 30 minutes with her and honestly came away from that meeting exhausted. She would have reduced down the toughest Commando into a dribbling mess. She berated my sense of humour, the comedy used by the Punchliner comedians in the family friendly shows and more, much more, even our movie choices were given the treatment. She also told me that she had kept her own kids out of Camp Carnival and Circle C because she did not feel that that what did there was “ appropriate “ and again she lectured me on family values. Found this to very sad because I think children sometimes crave the company of other kids and I know I am biased but Camp Carnival/Circle C and now Camp Ocean is the best play area at sea and I think they would have fun. Some may be saying that I should just ignored her but I can’t, and I really shouldn’t either. I listened and even when she told me that I would “ not have a place in Heaven” did I stop listening and stopped trying to understand. ………………OK, that’s not entirely true because I did a one point wonder if I would lose my job if I stated to rub my own nipples during our meeting. But seriously, I really did try to understand her despite the fact that she said I would be taking the elevator to the bottom floor when I pop my clogs. My poo joke was the foundation and despite the fact that she listed all the “other disgusting things parents were allowing their children to see and do on the ship” it was her family she loved and was concerned about and who was I to judge? It was one of those meetings where I knew I was never going to turn her around so that she would one day become a Diamond member but even so she deserved to be listened to. It was wonderful though that when I come out of a meeting like that I met my dozens of guests on my walk back to the showroom who stopped me to shake my hand, tell me about their Alaskan experiences and to say how much they have enjoyed my silliness. But even with 27, close now to 28 years of experience it is still the one, the one guest who will despise me forever probably …..who I always remember. I hate that about myself. Do I think I have family values? Yes, very strong ones at that. I recognise that the family is the cornerstone of society. Without it, were doomed. wywh
