Course Reminder - MLC - 2006 The Maritime Labor Convention and the Canadian MOU This past Tuesday, August 20, the Maritime Labor Convention took effect in the waters of ratifying countries (45 of them), including Canada. Operators of vessels 500 Gross International Tons (GT ITC) and greater trading to countries that have ratified the MLC should immediately begin preparations to comply with this regulation. MITAGS-PMI in partnership with Agile Marine can assist you/your Company in familiarizing you with these new International requirements in a two day course being held at MITAGS (19-20 September) or at PMI (26-27 September). Agile Marine can also provide you with assistance in complying with your specific requirements and relevant preparatory documentation. You / your company will be in a better position to contract the U.S. Coast Guard to schedule a compliance inspection and obtain a Statement of Voluntary Compliance – Maritime Labor Convention (SOVC-MLC) certificate. (For classed tugs, contact your classification society.) Vessels less than 500 GT ITC trading internationally are required to comply with the MLC and may be asked by foreign Port State Control authorities to demonstrate compliance. For this reason, the Coast Guard recommends that owners of such vessels develop and maintain a Declaration of Maritime Labor Compliance (DMLC).
