Court diary - The one that got away !!! A taxi driver found himself on the wrong side of the law when he was stopped for a traffic violation. A check was done on his name and date of birth and it was established that he had outstanding warrants of arrest for other traffic violations. He was arrested and detained at Wynberg police station and he appeared the next day in the Wynberg, traffic court. When he appeared in front of the presiding magistrate in his plea explanation he gave evidence that he does not know why he was arrested, the traffic officer stopped him for driving without a driving licence and the Officer saw an old summons lying in the car and just copied the name and address from the summons and then arrested him. The car belonged to a friend. He did not challenge the Officer because the Officer spoke Afrikaans which he did not understand fully. His girlfriend was in court and she produced his identification document. The name on the ID was different to the name on the summons. The accuse was released on a warning to appear in the same court on Monday so that the traffic officer could be called as a witness to explain what happened. Needless to say the traffic officer was in court but the taxi driver had absconded and did not make an appearance. The Traffic Officer disputed what the taxi driver had said about copying his name from an old summons and told the court that taxi drivers that know that they have outstanding warrants of arrest against them always drive around with no identification on them. It seems that this taxi driver got away until the long arm of the law catch up with him again.
