Courtesy of Islamic Center of Nashville: SURAH AL BAQARAH & SURAH AL IMRAN There are many Ahadith about the greatness of both these surahs. One such Hadith states that on the Day of Resurrection surah al Baqarah and surah Ali Imran will come in the shape of two clouds, and will intercede on behalf of the people ( ones who reads them). 1. According to a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad SAWS, the greatest verse of the Quran is the Verse of the Throne. ( Sahih Muslim) There are many many benefits of this great verse. This verse gives protection against evil Jinns and Shaitan. It also takes the reader to Jannah if he recites the verse after each fardh salah. Regular recitation protects our children, our homes, and even our neighbors homes. 2. Surah al Baqarah ends with many ayats devoted to transactions. Allah SWT reminds the reader to be mindful of Him when we engage in any kind of transaction. Strong condemnation is given to people who deal with Riba or interest. Allah SWT states that He and His Prophet wage war against such individuals. 3. The longest ayat of the Quran is verse 282 of this surah. It is of course not a coincidence that the message of proper and just transaction is found in this verse. Allah SWT reminds us of big and small things. He (SWT) instructs us to write and document any monetary exchange to avoid future conflicts. SubhanAllah ! 4. In these last verses of the surah many ayats are devoted to spending in the Way of Allah SWT . Charitable spending has to be for Allah Alone, with the correct intentions: a. We are warned against showing off , b. We are reminded never to belittle people we help by reminders of our generosity. It will humiliate the receiver. Allah SWT states that Kind speech and forgiveness are better that charity followed by injury. c. While spending in Allahs Path, one should only give what is good, what we would like for ourselves ( not old and raggedy stuff)! d. Hidden charity is better, but charity that is disclosed is also good. e. Charity should also be offered to the ones who do not ask, but are needy ( e.g. the working poor). f. Charity should be given all the time, by day, at night, secretly and publicly. g. Allah SWT very generously rewards the charitable person. 5. According to many scholars, like Ibn Abbas RA, who believe that verse number 281 of surah al Baqarah was the very last verse of the Quran: Fear the day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned and they will not be wronged. Some scholars also opine that the last verse that was revealed is in surah Maidah: 3. (5:3). It clearly shows that we came from Allah and we will return back to Him. 6. This beautiful surah ends beautifully. The last two verses of this surah have many benefits. They are considered a treasure from under the Throne of Allah. Allah SWT shows His servants how to supplicate to Him. THE SURAH ALI IMRAN It is a Madani surah containing 200 verses. It is the second largest surah of the Quran. 1. Many beautiful and powerful duas are scattered throughout this surah. One such gem is found in verses 8 and 9. It is a request to keep our hearts firm on His Guidance . 2. In verses 31 and 32 Allah SWT connected His Love with the love of Prophet Muhammad SAWS: Say (O Muhammad ) if you should love Allah, then follow me, (so) Allah will love you and forgive you your sins ... A persons Islam is only complete when he follows the Quran and follow the sunnah of our beloved Prophet SAWS. 3. Isa ASs miraculous birth is mentioned here. Allah SWT compared his birth without a father with Adam ASs creation without a father and a mother, showing us His Power to create. He is the Owner of everything and He has the Ability to do anything. 4. Allah SWT encourages dialogue between Muslims and people of scripture. AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST!!!! Jazakum Allah khair.
