Courtesy of UNDSS In the Event of Severe Storm Conditions: 1. Avoid going out of your home unless there is a grave, life threatening circumstance that requires travel (e.g. a major medical emergency). Shelter in place (preferably in your designated home safe area) unless 2. Directed to evacuate by competent disaster management authorities. 3. If you need to evacuate, follow evacuation routes and avoid coastal areas, riverbanks and streams. Inform DSS and others where you are going. 4. Monitor development and keep abreast of disaster management advisories. For living in low lying areas susceptible to flooding, be aware of rising water levels and be prepared to evacuate if directed by competent disaster management authorities. If you are evacuating, take your disaster supplies kit with you to the shelter. Inform SSU about any impending evacuation. 5. If necessary, turn off the mains (especially gas and electricity) in your home. Unless otherwise instructed, turn the refrigerator to its coldest setting and keep closed to conserve cold temperatures so that your stored food may last longer when power gets cut off or if you need to turn power off. 6. When sheltering in place, stay indoors, keep away from windows and glass doors. Keep curtains and blinds closed. If the weather suddenly clears up, do not venture outside immediately since this may merely be the “Eye of storm. “ Foul weather may return on short notice. If absolutely necessary, this lull (it may last for about one or two hours) may be used to effect only the most essential repairs to your home and other similar tasks. 7. Avoid using the phone except for serious emergencies since disaster management authorities need first priority on telephone lines. 8. Ensure that everyone is well hydrated. Even if you run out of your initial supply or bottled water and other potable liquids. Other sources can be tapped. Even if you shut down your water mains or if water supplies are cut off, there is usually a fair amount of water remaining in the pipes that you could draw from. In extreme cases water from the reservoir of your toilet bowl (not the one in the bowl itself) May be used after purification. Purify all water drawn from other sources by boiling it( for at least five minutes), using purification chemicals (e.g. water purification tablets) or using filtration devices duly rated by competent water purification experts/authorities. You may consult with the Occupational Health Unit (OHU) for further details about water purification methodologies. 9. Emergency Kit suggestions: In a watertight container, prepare and emergency kit (good enough for your household for at least three days) Consisting of the following (and adjusted accordingly to your specific needs). • Flashlight with extra batteries (you may also consider a “perpetual “emergency flashlight that has a wind-up dynamo to supply power.) • An emergency radio (either battery powered or powered by a dynamo) with extra batteries; • Non-perishable food (e.g. canned goods, dry crackers, instant noodles, high energy food such as energy bars/granola bars); • Canned or tetra-packed juices, bottled water; • Prescription and non-prescription medications as part of a first aid kit; • Personal hygiene items (e.g. toothbrush, toothpaste, bath soap, laundry soap, contact lens supplies); • other sundry supplies such as tools (e.g. hammer, nails, duct tape), paper plates/cups, plastic utensils, non-electric can opener, plastic garbage bags with ties, candles and water proof matches, ground mat, mosquito net/ insect repellent, water purification tablets (or other means of purifying water), at least one set of change of clothing (including a raincoat or jacket) and spare eyeglasses (if you wear them).
