Courtesy of the National Lithuanian American Hall of Fame.... Finally!!! Leading Lithuanian academicians and historians concur to what we have been saying for years, that Lithuania has always been a kingdom and her rulers kings. This august panel agrees that the terms Grand Duchy (kunigaikstyste) and Grand Dukes (kunigaiksciai) originate from a Russian tradition, and that there is no reason whatsoever not to address the largest and most powerful nation in Europe during the Middle Ages as a Kingdom and its rulers Kings. To those, who for some illogical reasoning, insist on labeling Lithuania as a grand duchy and its rulers mere grand dukes, one only has to look at black on white, archival evidence to debunk this myth created by Lithuanias occupiers and enemies: The royal seals of Lithuanias rulers noted on official documents and treaties clearly indicate that they were kings (Rex); Pope John XII in his correspondence with Gediminas addresses him as ...King of Lithuanians and many Rus...; Vytautas was given the title of king by the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund in 1429. Vytautas crown was stolen in transit. Are we to deny Vytautas the title he had simply because he didnt wear a crown? After all, isnt a crown only a symbol of the title? Jogailas royal seal on the Treaty of Dubysa is as King of Lithuania, which occurred 4 years prior to his ascension to the Polish throne. Despite the fact that Lithuanias rulers addressed themselves as kings, and were recognized by surrounding states as kings, and the Popes addressing them as kings, some Lithuanians wish to keep regurgitating Russian influenced labeling of Lithuania and its rulers...How absurd!!!
