Cowtown, 1584 Almaden Rd. As an entertainer in the SF bay area, Don became affectionately known as The Crazy Gringo. He had two Country Music night clubs in San Jose(Sams Club), and was the band leader at the well-known Cowtown for 30 years, where they packed the house five nights a week. His song The Crazy Gringo charted on billboard and was a local hit for many weeks. In January, 2011, Don did his last show at the Three Flames in San Jose. The venue overflowed that night with 50 years worth of friends and fans in attendance for his final, historic performance.(Pic shows Bobby Black w/ his brother, Larry, in The Cowtown era, 1968.) Cowtown in San Jose, the Horseshoe Club in Santa Clara and the Silver Saddle in Morgan Hill, the Rio Grande in Mtn. View, and Cheers in Sunnyvale all have since closed even with the demise of the Saddle Rack in San Jose. Country music is a viable genre in Santa Clara County. In time, a couple of clubs that open up will have country music nights. But no matter what it is, its not going to be the same. The Cowtown and Saddle Rack was legendary.
