Coywolf update! As Ive educated myself on the coyotes visiting us - have been amazed at what I have learned about these amazing four-legged beings. They are actually coywolves - an amazing hybrid of wolf and coyote that has evolved over the last 100 years. I was surprised at how much larger they are, a tail like a wolf, and really actually beautiful. There ability to survive in urban environments remarkable - as many as 2000 in a city like Chicago. They also are more monogamous than humans - staying with their mate for life and fiercely loyal parents to their young. They have baffled wildlife biologists because even in efforts to remove them and relocate them their numbers increase. For the most part they are not a danger - almost every single issue of danger has come from feeding them - NEVER FEED THEM OR ANY WILDLIFE - its bad for them and us - and that is when they will approach humans and cause a dangerous situation - they are extremely stealthy, sly and able to survive by being like a four-legged ninja - and excellent at finding places even within an urban landscape with large highways smalls areas of nature that are never visited - where they set up their dens. By the way, wolf urine (Yes you can get it on amazon and its smell may keep away every animal within miles) is a safe and natural deterent - as well as not keeping garbage outside, never feeding them, and keeping your woods cleared of underbrush for them to hide or make a den. Remember they do get rid of rodents. Just watched this amazing documentary on them on PBS - its now on netflix - heres a glimpse:
