Crack! An errant baseball, a hurled stone, or a falling branch is all it takes to end the life of a windowpane. And for most modern, double-glazed windows, that means a trip to the local glass shop for repairs GETTING STARTED Tools 1 ½-inch putty knife: For tooling putty; should be flexible and clean. 5-in-1 painters tool: For scraping out old putty. Heat gun: For softening old putty. 1-inch paintbrush: For priming sash. 1: Remove glazing putty Pry out loose chunks of glazing compound with a putty knife. Soften remaining areas with a heat gun and scrape the putty away. 2: Set the glass in place Set new glass onto a bead of putty. Press glazing points into the wood every 8 in. Let the excess putty that oozes out under the glass harden and slice it off with a utility knife later. 3: Spread the compound Cover the perimeter of the glass with a heavy layer of putty. Be sure to completely fill in the recess; dont leave any gaps or hollow spots. 4: Smooth the compound Dip a putty knife in mineral spirits to lubricate it and smooth out the compound. Wet the knife again and run over the compound as many times as it takes to create a smooth surface 5: Clean the excess Drag the ridge of excess compound away from the finished joint and scrape it up. Be careful not to touch the smoothed surface. And you are done....
