Craig Spector nails the real takeaway on this whole Permuted - TopicsExpress

Craig Spector nails the real takeaway on this whole Permuted kerfluffle: In all the furor surrounding this -- in all the passionate views both con and pro Permuted Press -- one thing seems to be accepted without question: the publisher changed the terms of a signed, standing contract. Uhm, folks? They cant DO that. Neither can you. It obviates the entire purpose of even HAVING a contract. Apparently Permuted Press is asserting that they can, but this is frankly ludicrous, unless PP authors signed an agreement which granted PP the right to do so, and which case a) PP is a shady outfit, or b) the author is an idiot, or c) both. Which means: if they have notified you that they are not going to honor any of the terms of the agreement you and they have signed, they are in breach; you notify them of this and give them a period of time to remedy their breach or the contract is null and void; if they fail to remedy, you notify them of this and revert your rights. Do this in snail mail as well as email, and certified. Specify which clauses they have breached. If the contract didnt specify that you have to pay them for fees and expenses related to your title, you DONT have to pay them.
