Craigs Shocktober Horror Marathon 2014 - Day 11: Oculus (2014) Two siblings are nearly murdered by their parents, who have become possessed by a cursed mirror. When they grow up, the older sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan - who Ive met by the way, have ever mentioned?) has become obsessed with proving the supernatural abilities of the mirror in order to exonerate her father and her brother Tim, who was locked up in a psychiatric after the ordeal. To this end, Kaylie has set up the mirror in their old house under controlled conditions, with cameras to record the entire experiment before she destroys it once and for all... if it doesnt destroy her first. Ive got to say - wow. I never expected this movie to be so good, especially when WWE Studios flashed on the screen before the film even started and I got See No Evil flashbacks. When the movie was released, my only interest was that this was the American movie debut of Karen Gillan, former Doctor Who star and all around ginger goddess. Her performance is really good too, which is helped by the dynamic character she plays; Kaylie is a tough as balls, determined young woman who has methodically thought out how to confront the evil forces within the mirror. The movie really shines with its engaging story and clever editing as the movie jumps between the past and present to slowly reveal Tim and Kaylies tragic history with the mirror, culminating in a shocking climax. While there are *slight* pacing issues, this movie is very much worth your time! Score: 3 out of 4 Half-eaten light-bulbs
