Crate/retrieve/illness The top of the crate is now about 3/4ths - TopicsExpress

Crate/retrieve/illness The top of the crate is now about 3/4ths the way on, and Keepers eating her meals in there. At this point she goes in, turns around and lays down on the cue kennel about 7/10 times on the first cue, still reliant on food as a motivator. Im hoping that by next weekend well be able to have the crate fully assembled and start working on shutting the door and shifting from bribe (Look I have food, cue behavior) to reward (food happens after behavior has completed). Retrieve work has paid off on the metal bowls. Shes now tried bringing me her bowl randomly for reward, and also as a I dont want to do that. Can I got paid for this instead? Time to start cleaning up the hold, and branching out into other objects. Having never trained a retrieve with a clicker before, it still feels a bit unstructured and by chance, but Im getting what I need. Maybe not as fast as with a compulsion method, but I dont remember any of our compulsion trained dogs offering to grab things just to see what would happen. Last week she had a serious round of diarrhea starting Wednesday, the day after we gave her monthly heartworm med. Called the vet before and from work Friday, as it hadnt let up so much as shed run out of things to poop, and she was no longer her usual happy self. Dad was kind enough to take in a stool sample (no parasites found, but apparently gnarly enough the tech at the counter said that poor dog) and we started her on Amoxicillin and Proviable probiotics. As soon as she had her first dose of Amoxi, the runs stopped, and we are back to firm stool. Still not sure if the HW med was the cause, or just poor timing. Well give the same meds the same way next month and find out. Fingers crossed it was an unrelated stomach bug. I can definitively say I trust her housetraining now, as she got me up five times Thursday night/Friday morning because she needed to go and didnt want to do it in the bedroom. She was persistent and clear, and just obnoxious enough that I got up, even as the night wore on and the sleep deprivation grew (and I wanted to sleep more and more). Finally thought to crate the Setters and leave my room door open so Keeper could make it out the dog door on her own and I might grab a couple hours uninterrupted sleep... only to be woken up by my mother asking if I meant to leave my door open. I made chocolate chip cookies and took a couple dozen to work today, Mom finished baking the leftover dough and Ill be taking cookies to the vet clinic for fielding my numerous calls on Friday as I tried to coordinate with Dad and the clinic.
