Crazy Number Fact: Pick something random that you can measure, but where you dont already know the answer. This works best when you expect to get a large number. Some examples: How many gallons of water are in Lake Michigan? How many square kilometers is the area of Mongolia? How many hamburgers did McDonalds sell in the 1990s? Assuming you can find the answer to your question, what are the odds that the number itself will begin with a 1? How about a 2? 3? 4? You would guess 1/9, right? There are 9 digits that could start the number & theres probably an equally likely chance of each, right? Wrong! Theres actually about a 30% chance that the number will start with 1. There is less chance that itll start with 2, and the probability decreases until theres only about a 5% chance it starts with a 9! This isnt so much Mathematical as it is a reflection of how numbers appear in real life. They dont always show up the way we expect them to!
