Crazy Wind will also be showing on Monday night May 12th at Doug Fir. Crazy Wind makes a line of comfortable, timeless, and practical uniforms using Japanese kasuri—traditional cotton ikat—sourced directly from family-operated workshops in rural Japan. Every Crazy Wind piece is manufactured with care by local factories and workshops here in Portland, such as Portland Garment Factory, Columbiaknit, and Beckel Canvas. The Crazy Wind name drives from the Japanese word fuukyo, which refers to a person with artistic madness. The word fuukyo is constructed with two characters, “wind” and “crazy.” Crazy Wind is the creation of Japanese-born designer Chiyo Takahashi, who’s based in Portland, with the help of her mother, Hatsuyo Takahashi, who’s based in Nagoya, Japan. After more than 10 years in the sportswear industry as a designer/director for major companies, Chiyo decided to launch the small line that’s rooted in her native culture while also blending in her casual streetwear aesthetic. The spring/summer 2014 collection features stars-and-stripes-inspired kasuri and solid color textiles, both made at the same workshops in Japan.
