Crazy country, this one. Ive been watching NBCs prime time news with Brian Williams last night, which has been stoking up Ebola hysteria with 9-10 minutes of detailed coverage of Ebola in America for the last week. Last night Williams was claiming maybe we had turned a corner and American hysteria was dying down. It was an appalling performance in which he was now implicitly blaming the mood he helped to create on the rest of us. A friend sent me this comment. No idea where it comes from or who made it, but it sums up this American moment well: Twice as many people have been married to Larry King as have Ebola in the U.S. The New York Times had a fine piece recently by Jennifer Steinhauer on Ebola hysteria in America. Here was a typical over-the-top passage: Also last week, a teacher at an elementary school in Strong, Me., was placed on a 21-day paid leave when parents told the school board that they were worried he had been exposed to Ebola during a trip to Dallas for an educational conference. This is called an abundance of caution here. I would say an abundance of craziness. nytimes/2014/10/20/us/fear-of-ebola-closes-schools-and-shapes-politics.html
