Crazy, crazy story to tell you guys today! But first let me preface this by saying that this could happen to anyone… Let’s set the scene… I was filling up my car with fuel (nice to see the petrol prices plummeting too!) after coaching the early morning Men’s lifting program at the gym… I pulled out of the petrol station at Asda and set off to get back onto the M62 As I was driving along the main road, there was a car coming at full speed towards me on the wrong side of the road aka – MY SIDE So I started to slow down, thinking this guy was overtaking someone and would pull back in Nope There were no other cars on the road Just us So I slammed on the brakes and seriously considered about 10 options.. - I could swerve to the wrong side of the road myself to dodge him (whilst thinking if I do that and he swerves too, that would be a head-on collision!) - I could flash my lights and beep the horn, maybe he’s asleep at the wheel, or texting, or thought that it was a dual carriageway - I could try and stop completely then do an amazing Bruce Willis style dive out of the door and into the trees on the roadside ^^ these thoughts all happened in about 2 seconds, somehow! Anyway, whilst in my head I was being all Bruce Willis, truth is I just slammed on the brakes, he must’ve seen me and swerved back to the right side of the road We just missed each other and basically all ended well I did have to chill out with a couple of deep, slow breaths afterwards though… …and what I want to get across – the lesson for today, if you like – is that NOT thinking and just letting the body and the automatic mind do the business is sometimes not a bad idea. To switch back to fitness then… When someone has to eat low carb, what’s the ONLY thing they want to eat? Of course, it’s carbs. Dreaming of bread and pasta isn’t going to help anyone. Or when you know you have to wake-up at 5am in order to train at 6, what’s the ONLY thing you can think of? Staying in your warm cosy bed, I’m sure. But over the long run, people who listen to their EMOTIONS will likely fail. If you let your emotions lead you to the decisions that affect your actions, you’re going to have a really tough time making a lasting physical change in your body. Instead, you need to ‘hack’ the thinking approach and learn to let your actions dictate how you feel Basically, switching the thought process around! For example, one of my private members, Nick, has just completed an insane 12 week transformation – check out our FB page for the pictures – and generally speaking Nick stopped thinking (no offence if you’re reading Nick!) Which means: - we gave him a nutrition plan, he chose the foods he wanted to eat – then STOPPED thinking and just ate the right foods at the right times - we told him what weights to lift, how many times and on what days, with a coach stood next to him every step of the way and doing the thinking for him Which means, even when Nick felt like shit and didn’t want to train or do the correct actions, we made it easy for him to do the actions anyway Without requiring a great deal of thought or emotion You see, when you take your emotions out of the equation and just FOCUS on taking the actions you said you would when you start a new program or nutrition plan – you then take actions consistently When you take actions consistently you get RESULTS When you get results you FEEL AMAZING
