Crazy stuff going on in girls High School basketball - specifically dealing with womens College basketball recruiting. Pretty soon some college coaches will be so desperate, they will be recruiting girl babies from hospital maternity nurseries based on their length at birth. I jest, but that day might not be far off. Case in point, 6 foot 3 inch, 8th grader Charli Collier, a 14 year-old attending Crosby Middle school in Crosby, Texas has committed to attending the University of Texas in Austin. Charli was heavily recruited by 35 colleges, including Oklahoma, Duke, and Louisville. Her mom, Ponda, is 5 11 and played college basketball herself and her dad, Eliott, is 6 8. The article I read did not say if the father participated in sports in high school or college. On the other end of the spectrum is Aja Wilson, a 6 5 high school senior from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School (S.C.) who has not committed to any college yet, but she is considering playing for Connecticut Huskies, North Carolina Tar Heels, Clemson Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Out of these 5 programs - UCONN and Tennessee are head and shoulders above the other three. Aja is the only player in the top 10 high school players in the U.S. who has not committed to a college yet and there are only 2 other high school girls in the top 50 who have not committed. To be sure, if Aja chooses an existing solid program she will help that team get further in the NCAA tournament and if she chooses a program that does not have a solid program yet, they might be able to build a program around her. Chances are, though, that she will choose to play for a top 25 college team.
