Crazy weekend! Dressed up as a pack of Allens jellybeans for Halloween in matching outfits with a 60yo gay man then had a great night with a bunch of awesome people. Then yesterday, hungover, I somehow got through a productive shift as a frozen yogurt compressor mechanic (New job! Thanks Aiesha!!) then wandered into a programming hackathon competition at the university and pretended I belonged there (cheers Tim). Without any programming experience I joined a team that had built these neat air quality sensor data loggers using arduino (that have exciting aquaponics applications) and we built an app that generates maps based on real time air quality data so you can optimise your bike route and time of ride to get the best training and clean air for your lungs aerobic capacity. Or you can use it to find the fresh powder on the slopes, or to optimise crop location and yield in a greenhouse. There are 150 units going to Ghana next week. I learned a stack of awesome stuff from our awesome team who were very very generous and patient with me, put together and delivered a killer business/marketing presentation and pitch for the companies that were present and then we won $1k (split five ways) and an invitation to vegas in january! Also, it looks like I might have scored an internship with a GIS company, which could potentially lead to learning some really cool stuff, a nice paycheck and maybe... a visa!! Maybe, Im trying not to get my hopes up on that one but its nice to have some potential. Exciting times!
