Creating Content One of Tessas weaknesses is laziness. At 10, shes still very much a kid at heart and only wants to play, play, play, all day long. But unfortunately for her, I insist on English classes because I place high priority on the language. Her English tutor has complained several times on Tessas lack of effort in answering comprehension passages and in her essay writing. She will do them in the fastest way possible with as little thought possible. It is frustrating for us because we both know she is capable of more. At the same time, our standards for Tia are lower because shes wired differently. But Tessa?!!!?? The lack of effort just drives me potty!! After yet another complaint this morning after class, I made her look at this Van Gogh jigsaw puzzle I had on my bedroom wall and made her give me 10 elaborate sentences on it. She started with, its old, its big, its yellow..... NOT ACCEPTABLE. Her tutor already told her, those are Year 2 answers. You are now doing Year 7 work. Please..........think a bit more and back up each sentence with your thoughts. I told Tessa that if she didnt do it (shes really more than capable!), we will sit here until she did it, so she finally did it, not without rolling her eyes. 1. This is a framed jigsaw puzzle completed by my grandmother with a little help from my Godmother, done many years ago before I was born. 2. The jigsaw puzzle is of a painting done by Vincent Van Gogh, way before the 1950s (she made that up) before he died, and he was probably thinking of something happy to paint when he did it. 3. My grandmother framed this sunflower jigsaw and gave it to my Mother because she knew how much my mother loves sunflowers. 4. My Mother put the jigsaw puzzle on her bedroom wall so that she could see it every morning the moment she opened her eyes. 5. It is also on a green background because green is my Mothers favourite colour. And it is my Grandmothers too! And hey, so is mine! 6. The sunflowers are facing all directions in the painting and there are two signatures on the jigsaw. They are that of Vincent Van Gogh and my Grandmother. The reason for their signatures on the painting is to show who did the piece and who owns it. 7. I think that Vincent Van Gogh painted this sunflower painting because someone had asked him to paint it and it was sold to people and many years later, people started photocopying it and making it into jigsaw puzzles. 8. My Mothers bedroom is filled with paintings of flowers because she loves flowers otherwise she would have bought paintings of elephants or other stuff. My grandmother loves flowers too and was a florist many years ago. 9. Doing a jigsaw puzzle takes lots of patience and this is like a million pieces which means my Grandmother was super duper patient. 10. When I grow up, I want my Mother to do exactly the same thing and give me a jigsaw puzzle of my favourite flowers that she has completed. To which I asked, so what is your favourite flower then? And Tessa thought and said, I dont know yet. OK, I will try to find a jigsaw puzzle of I dont know yet......just to make you happy. And to that, my 10 year old Tessa was in fits of laughter and a happy camper. The End.
