[Creationist]: I consider you to be a rational thinker, but in prior talks you said in the laws of physics there is no free will. So how do you reconcile critical thinking? [Sean Carroll]: I know Im in trouble if someone says I consider you to be a rational thinker, but... before he asks me the question. If I had the computation power of Laplaces demon and I were able to write down the microstate of the quantummechanical wavefunction of all of my elementary particels, which are interacting according to the laws of of physics, then I could predict myself, but I dont have that information. And therefor the vocabulary which I use to describe myself is if I had a free will, and in this framework this is absolutely real. Free will is as real as baseball. The rules of baseball are nowhere to be found in the laws of physics, but that does not mean that baseball doesnt exist. It just means its not there in the fundamental laws.
