Credit where credit is due. Last night, Narrabeen and Dee Why Firefighters were turned out to a unit fire in The Kingsway at Dee Why. Shortly after 8, a Triple Zero (000) phone call was received by our Communications Centre advising that an apartment was on fire on the top floor of a unit block. Dee Why Station arrived first and sent a message that people were evacuating the unit block and that there was smoke issuing from one of the units. It only took Firefighters in breathing apparatus a few minutes to locate and extinguish the fire and then another 30 minutes to clear the smoke. The fire, whilst quite minor when compared to what Firefighters usually attend would have been a lot worse if not for the actions of the apartments occupant. Here is what he did. On discovering the electrical fire, he tried to extinguish the fire by smothering it. He then went outside into the hall way and returned with a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the fire. He then turned off the power at the switch box in his unit, walked outside the unit and closed the door behind him. He then rang Triple Zero (000) to report the fire and activated the unit blocks fire alerting system to enable other residents to leave the building. Given the nature of the fire, this gentlemans action were certainly first class. Well done from Narrabeen and Dee Why Firies.
