Cremello ~ This colour is produced by 2 Cream genes, acting on a Chestnut colour(which is produced by 2 Red genes). Therefore, the genetics of Cremello are always : 2 Red genes, 2 Cream genes : ee CrCr In other words ... Cremellos are homozygous for Red and homozygous for Cream. Homozygous simply means, 2 of the same gene. The other important pair of genes, (:)) is Agouti. However, Agouti only determines the colour of horses with a Black gene, it produces Bay, Black, Buckskin, Perlino etc .. it does this by controlling the distribution of the Black pigment, and since Chestnuts (and therefore Cremellos), have 2 Red genes, and therefore dont have a Black gene (no Black pigment), the Agouti does not affect their colour at all! All Chestnuts carry a pair of Agouti genes, but because you cant see it, the only way to know if your Chestnut carries Bay, Brown and/or solid Black Agouti, is to test for it.
