Increase, expand, develop, pour in more; fertile and expansive; ancestors send their blessings, rain spirits. Diminishing without end will necessarily augment things and bring blessing. Accept this and use the energy of Augmenting. Diminishing and Augmenting offer a paradigm of sacrifice and its results. Augmenting is the blessing: What is above gives to what is below. The root is is a recipient for food, the meats eaten at the feast, a vessel overflowing with blessing, the sun that appears through the grace of the ancestor after a dark time, gladdening and enriching everything. This is the feast in which all partake and the blessings showered on us through the ancestors after they have received and accepted the sacrifice and presented our needs to the High Lord. It is a synonym of yi, change, as gift or blessing, a transformation affected by a crossing. Like a transforming line in the Change, it is a connection of Heaven and Earth brought about by ritual, sacrifice and inner work. Philosophically, it is what enriches power and virtue, rising and opening from the seeds. It is the waxing moon, the celebrant, the New King, the blessing. Augmenting. The Blessing. Advantageous to have a direction to go. Advantageous to step into the Great Stream. Harvesting. The old character shows a container and the sign for river or water, a stream of blessings. Augmenting describes your situation in terms of increase, advance and development. The way to deal with it is to increase your involvement and pour in more energy. This is a time of gain, profit and expansion. Have a place to go. Impose a direction on things. Enter the stream of life with a purpose or embark on a significant enterprise. These things bring profit and insight. The hexagram figure shows arousing new energy penetrating the outer world. Wind and thunder augmenting. Strip away your old ideas. By continually diminishing things, you have created augmenting, for increase and decrease are each others beginnings. Through Augmenting you enrich your power to realize the Way. Augmenting continually enriches things without setting up structures. It uses flourishing and harvesting. When you can imagine an improvement, shift the way you do things. When there is excess or error, correct it. Diminish what is above and augment what is below. Stimulate people at their work without limiting them. The Source above has descended, and its Way is shining greatly. Let it stimulate you. Having a place to go or imposing a direction on things brings profit and insight. Make correcting one-sidedness and error the center of your concerns. It will bring rewards. Step into the Stream of Life. Secure your vehicle, the boat to carry you, then make your move. Augmenting stirs things up and grounds them. Like the sun rising, it has no limits. When Heaven spreads out, Earth gives birth. Together they increase and augment things on all sides. Augment everything. This connects you with the time, so you can accompany it as it moves. Wind and Thunder. Augmenting. This is a time when Noble One visualizes improvement and consequently shifts his position. If there is excess, he alters it. Spirit manifests in quake and thunder, speaking and spreading joy through the Intermediaries. These are the Operators, those who work with the spirit. Wind and Wood above enter subtly, penetrating, pervading and coupling, while Thunder below rouses and germinates new potential, sprouting energies that thrust up from beneath. This is the Woody Moment: rousing energy within that expands into outer penetration, coupling and augmenting all things. The ideal Realizing Person reflects this by perceiving how things can be improved and shifting his stance accordingly. Work through rousing and inspiring. A cycle is beginning. Fix the omen. Six at Second: Augmenting. The Blessing. Someone augments him. Ten pairs of tortoise divinations cannot control or contradict this. Wise Words! Trial: An ever-flowing Way. The King makes presentations to the Supreme Power. The Way is open. Originating outside, this is coming. A blessing, a Mandate from Heaven. Anything you wish to do will prosper. The Way is open to your ideas, not just now, but in the future. Enjoy it! But remember the spirit in your happiness. Then the Way will truly be open. Bring your inner and outer life into accord. Be open and provide what is needed. ________________________________________ #61 Centering and Connecting the Spirits [Inner Truth] Sincere, truthful; connect your inner and outer lives; a heart emptied and at peace; connection to the spirit; capture, spoils, captives offered in sacrifice; major site of initiation and creative transformation, the Opened Heart. Articulate the Mandate, then trust in it. Connect the heart with the spirit. Accept this and use the energy of Centering and Connecting. This figure connects two very important terms in the world of Change. Fu, connection to the spirits is part of a phonetic family that includes a variety of interrelated meanings. It is a return to and of the spirit, establishing the myriad blessings that flow from the ancestors and Heaven through the act of sacrifice: benediction, celestial favor and great prosperity. It also means capture, spoils, booty; to take prisoners as victims for sacrifice; to drive out evil spirits. It is a Founding Father, an offering to the ancestors and a contract to recognize partners, a jade talisman and a bronze sacrificial vessel. Through all these meanings it points at connections to the spirit world and the carrying wave of blessing and energy that pours forth through that connection. Zhong, centering, is another term that permeates the ancient ritual world. It means moving to or being at the center, an equal or still point between opposites. It is the arrow that that hits the center of the target, the equinoxes, the pivotal points of the year. It is the coming in and going out of the souls from the center, the heart and its inner animation, the activity of the shen or spirits in the heart and their harmonizing influence. It refers to the inner world: meditation and the inner Way, putting something to the trial through divination. The root is a banner placed at the center point of the Four Sides, a hole or link to the world of the dead and the ancestors. Centering and Connecting to the Spirits represents an access to the thought of the heart. It opens a center where the vital forces are rooted in the self, the inner riches of pigs and fishes hidden in the Stream of Life. It is the space between Heaven and Earth where the Myriad Beings live, a mediating space that connects the inner and outer lives of all things. Thus it signifies divination and a symbol given by the spirits that is realized, proved and manifested in life. It is trust in the images that flow from the heart and the spirit that makes them true. Centering and Connecting the Spirits. Little pigs and fishes. Wise Words! The Way is open. Advantageous to step into the Great Stream. Advantageous Trial. Harvesting. Centering and Connecting to the Spirits describes your situation in terms of the need to bring your life into accord with the spirits. The way to deal with it is to make connecting the inner and the outer parts of your life your central concern. Be sincere, truthful and reliable. Make your inner vision and your outer circumstances coincide. Empty your heart so you can hear the inner voices. Act through these voices with sincerity and honesty in connecting with others. This will link you to the spirits and they will carry you through. Swim in the Stream of Life with a purpose, or embark on a significant enterprise. Put your ideas to the trial. Swim in the stream of the Way and gather the pigs and fishes. This is the right time to embark on significant enterprises. Ride in an empty wooden boat. Put your ideas to the trial. That brings profit and insight and connects you with Heaven above. Above Wind there are the Mists. Centering and Connecting to the Spirits. This is a time when Noble One deliberates the rites that release the people from death. Spirit works through those who lay out the offerings, speaks and spreads joy through the Intermediaries. Wind and Wood enter subtly, penetrating, pervading and coupling, while Mists rising from below stimulate and fertilize, joyous words cheer and inspire. This is Wood over Metal: an open center that allows inspiration to pervade and influence the world. The ideal Realizing Person reflects this by deliberating the Great symbols that can release us from the fear of death. Persist and work through inner inspiration.
