Cri Du Chat awareness week CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The week of May 4th-10th is International Cri Du Chat awareness week, and it’s a disease many people suffer from here in western Massachusetts. Cri du Chat Syndrome is a rare genetic condition. It occurs in approximately 1 in every 35,000 live births. According to the Cri Du Chat website, some of the most common characteristics of those living with Cri Du Chat are weak muscle tone, dislocation of the hips, impaired speech, a weak heart, scoliosis, etc. Every year, there are children that are born with Cri Du Chat syndrome and due to the rarity of the syndrome and the lack of information, the website says these children can frequently slip through the cracks, and are not diagnosed, or are misdiagnosed.
