Cricket: Black Caps win by eight wickets.... New Zealand wrapped up a convincing eight-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the two-test series against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval today. Chasing 105 for victory, New Zealand got to 107 for two, with the loss of openers Tom Latham and Hamish Rutherford. Ross Taylor hit the winning runs with a firm off drive to the fence to finish on 39, with Kane Williamson on 31. The win means New Zealand will have either won or drawn their last six series, a first for the for countrys test side, irrespective of the second test result. Latham edged a catch to slip off young offspinner Tharindu Kaushal for 17, while Rutherford fended a short ball to gully on 10. Sri Lanka had begun the day on 293 for five, still 10 runs in arrears overall. Seamer Tim Southee took three wickets, including key man, captain Angelo Mathews cheaply. Last pair Shaminda Eranga and Surenga Lakmal put on 59, with Eranga making a career-high 45 not out. Southee and Trent Boult picked up four wickets apiece to share 13 in the match. The second test starts at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. Scores: New Zealand 1st innings: 441 (Brendon McCullum 195, Jimmy Neesham 85, Kane Williamson 54; Angelo Mathews 3-39, Suranga Lakmal 3-90).
