Cricket fraternity welcomes budget, but with skepticism The cricket fraternity has welcomed the allocation of Rs 20 million by the government for construction of a cricket stadium in Mulpani of Kathmandu, but some doubt that the budget will be fully utilized. The government on Sunday allocated a total budget of about Rs 1.48 billion for sports and prioritized construction of the international level cricket stadium in Mulpani. Though begun a decade ago, less than half of the construction work on Mulpani stadium has been completed. However, Chudamani Paudel, spokesperson and joint secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is optimistic that the construction would gain momentum following allocation of budget by the government. “We have requested the Indian government for technical support and they have responded positively,” Paudel added. Though office bearers of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) are excited following the government’s announcement, they remain skeptical about completion of the stadium within a year. Though the players have taken the government’s annoucement positively, some of them are not satisfied. “We currently need at least four or five grounds so that players get the opportunity to practice and play enough matches,” said batsman Sharad Vesawkar, a member of the national cricket team. He, however, lauded the government’s step as a good beginning. Source: #myrepublica
