Cricketers possess strong stake the in Pulsar Sports Award Player of the Year (male): HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE KATHMANDU: Though the presence of two popular cricketers of the country poses a huge threat to other nominees in the Pulsar Sports Award Player of the Year (male), the category still provides a thrill when the winners are declared on July 2. Cricketers Paras Khadka and Basanta Regmi will be leading the Male PoY pack that includes Olympian athlete Tilak Ram Tharu, karateka Sunil Lama and footballer Bharat Khawas. Skipper Paras poses a strong contention with his exemplary leadership helping Nepal win two major tournaments last year. Led by Paras, Nepal remained in their hunt to fancy a chance of playing in the World Cup by winning the ICC World Cricket League Division-IV in Malaysia in September. The title in Malaysia was also Nepal’s first on a foreign soil. One month later, Nepal went on to win the ACC Trophy Elite sharing the title with hosts United Arab Emirates one month later. Paras, the winner of the category back in 2009, also led Nepal to a runner-up finish in the ACC Twenty20 Cup in Kathmandu in April. Paras, also a nominee in the Popular PoY category, was impressive with both bat and ball. He was declared the man-of-the-series in ACC Trophy Elite and ACC Twenty20. Paras scored 291 runs and claimed nine wickets in the ACC trophy, while he made 207 runs and grabbed four wickets in the ACC Twenty20. Paras took nine wickets in Nepal’s Division-IV victory where he managed 89 runs. Paras also led Nepal APF Club to back-to-back titles winning the National One-Day and Twenty20 titles. He scored an unbeaten 86 against Bhairahawa in the One-Day final and reached his half-century in just 26 balls in the Twenty20 final against Baitadi. Paras’ teammate Basanta will give a tough competition to him for the Award. Basanta was instrumental in Nepal’s success throughout the year where he claimed 41 wickets in Nepali calendar year. A man delivering at crunch situation, Basanta has established himself as a ‘match winner’ with impressive performances in every tournament. The left-arm spinner was declared the man-of-the-series in Nepal’s Division-IV title triumph for his record 21 wickets.
