Crime Prevention Tip Dealing with Strangers Who Come to Your Residence There are some people out there who make it their business to take advantage of good and trusting people. Arm yourself with the knowledge on how to deal with these individuals who may pose as solicitors, utility employees or any stranger that tries to contact you at home. *Never open the door to someone you don’t know or recognize. *Always look through the peep hole or window and see who it is at your door. *Require identification from all repair persons or public service individuals without opening the door. *If you do not want to deal with them, say “No thank you” or “Not interested” THROUGH THE CLOSED DOOR and walk away from the door. *If a stranger or solicitor tries to approach you while you are outside, do not let them approach. Say “No thank you,” and walk back into your house and close and lock your door. *If the stranger does not leave peaceably, call the police for assistance. *When a stranger leaves watch where they go next and notice what they do. Look for suspicious behavior such as looking in car windows, testing doors for locks, or entering back yards. *While inside your house try to activate your car or house alarm to draw attention to your home and drive away strangers who refuse to leave. *Call your neighbors and warn them to also watch for suspicious activity. *If you notice anything suspicious or are unsure about a situation please call police when the activity is happening. There is nothing foolproof in crime prevention and these tips should not be construed as an absolute guarantee against crime. HOWEVER, taking away the opportunity or slowing down a criminal (good locks, simple precautions, neighborhood alertness and common sense) can be sufficient to prevent most crime from happening in the first place.
