Crime in Liberia SITUATION REPORT #1 July was the peak month of crime occurrence in the greater Monrovia area in 2005 while November was the safest month, according to a report compiled by UNMIL Police which recorded more than 9,000 crimes in 2005. The Crime Analysis Team of UNMIL Police reported that during the year, the Police handled an average of 757 crimes per month totaling, 9,082 cases, with 881 cases in July as the highest figure and 646 cases in November as the lowest. February through April recorded less than 700 crimes per month while more than 800 cases were reported monthly from June through September. The most frequent crime in 2005 was Theft, which accounted for 37 per cent of the total. Among serious crimes, Aggravated Assault had the highest incident rate with 947 cases or 10 per cent of the total, followed by Burglary with more than 500 reported cases. Rape recorded 158 reported cases, while 28 cases of Homicide/Murder were reported. SITUATION REPORT #2 During the period of national elections in October and November, 2005, crime rate descended significantly, partly because of the boosted security measures instituted by the National and International Police Services as well as other Peacekeepers. However, crime rate picked up again in December as the holiday season set in. The Crime Analysis Team predicts the upward trend in crime, which began after the announcement of the final election result, will continue in 2006. SITUATION REPORT #3 The UN Police Planning Team has come up with a number of crime preventive measures to check this rising trend in crime. Prominent among these measures, include :- a) Increase in the number of Joint patrols (UNPOL and LNP Officers). They conduct round the clock patrols of all nooks and crannies of Liberia. b) New team sites have been opened in strategic areas to enhance police presence. c) Joint Foot patrols are being introduced too. All the patrols have either FPU officers or the UN Military to provide back up support, since both UN Police and LNP officers are unarmed. QUESTIONS: A Family Name: ………………… First Name: ………………. On Tuesday 29 July, 2009, 45 UNPOL officers went to the Malaysian Formed Police Unit Clinic at Comoro for the Blood Donation Drive. At 0900 hours on that date, the United Nations Police Commissioner arrived at the clinic to launch the Blood Donation Drive. In his opening speech, the Police Commissioner thanked all the UNPOLs for donating their blood to assist the local people. The Commissioner stated that it was important for the Timorese community to see that the UN police were there not only to assist with policing but also to assist the community in any way they could. He stated that the Blood Donation Drive was a good way to improve the relationship between UNPOL and the community at large. At the conclusion of his speech, the Police Commissioner himself went into the clinic and donated blood. The Commissioner was followed by 45 UNPOLs who each donated one pint of blood. The Clinic was manned by 1 Timorese Doctor and 3 nurses from Dili National Hospital. Each donor was required to complete a pre-donation declaration to ensure they were free of HIV, STD’s, blood borne diseases and any other ailment which would preclude them from donating blood. Due to the recent H1N1, or swine flu virus, each donor was also required to state if they had suffered from any coughs, fever, influenza or other flu-like symptoms in the previous two weeks. Each person then had their blood pressure and vital statistics recorded by a nurse. They then proceeded to a bed in the clinic where their blood was taken. One of the UNPOLs was unable to donate blood because the Doctor could not find a suitable vein in her arm to use. Members from the Public Information Office and the Timorese media were present at the blood drive and the campaign featured heavily in the media in the proceeding days. The Director of the Dili National Hospital, Mr Wayne Smith, on Timorese television, thanked UNPOL for donating blood, and assured them it would be used to save many lives. All involved agreed that the campaign was a success, both in terms of providing much needed blood and as a community relations exercise.
