Crimea is only one of many separatist regions across the world The Russian Federation’s support of Crimea breaking away from Ukraine opens up the possibility of other breakaway groups taking matters into their own hands. A very brief analysis of Wikipedia came up with a list of 98 countries where there are groups seeking greater autonomy through to secession. It is interesting to note that the Russian Federation (see 70 below) has thirteen regions that are not as keen as Crimea to be part of Russia. Has President Vladimir Putin opened up a can of worms in his own backyard? This was only a very quick look at the lists that are published and some are clearly not serious attempts to breakaway, but some are deadly serious and have already resorted to armed conflict. 1.
