Crisis of all sorts abound these days. The ominous is omnipresent; magnifying what could become the total ruin of life as we have known it. It is not my intention to minimize the severity of the clear present dangers, but to seek for some perspective in the malaise of the day. None of us are immune from potential calamity. So what is the solution to these tumultuous times? Flippancy is not the solution but focus is. Maybe you have the same tendency that I do and that is I take myself too seriously. When I do, I magnify the menacing and minimize the goodness of God. Jesus was often misunderstood for His perceived indifference to crisis. On one occasion, He is asleep on a boat with His disciples during a raging storm. The boat is brimming with water and they are losing their minds while He is completely calm in the chaos. His response to their plight was “Where is your faith?” In other words, “Where is your focus?” On another occasion, Mary and Martha are distraught over the death of their brother Lazarus and Jesus delayed in responding to his sickness and subsequent death. The seriousness of their problem was compounded in that Jesus waited until Lazarus had been interred for four days. His apparent indifference and the irreversible nature of their situation was unbearable. They had sent Him word that Lazarus’ condition was serious, terminal and critical! Their first words upon seeing Him were, “If you had been here our brother would not have died.” If….the biggest little word we use when we lose our emotional equilibrium. The seriousness of our situation eclipses the greater reality of who He is and all that He has done so many times before we were ambushed by adversity. We accuse Him of indifference when we misinterpret His ultimate intentions. The probable causes you to lose sight of His promises. The law of probability in its simplest definition is that given what has happened to others will likely happen to you. When we allow the law of probability to govern our lives, we live in survival mode. The challenges that may have a very simple solution fester to the point that you count the days you have left rather than celebrating the one you are presently in. We have a choice everyday to take what is happening to us seriously or to take Him and His promises seriously.
