Cristiano is better than Messi claim Il Corriere dello Sport’ Italian sports daily ‘Il Corriere dello Sport’ led with the Ballon d’Or in Monday’s edition and compared Cristiano Ronaldo’s rich vein of form to Leo Messi’s recent slump. The paper’s headline ran: “Cristiano is better than Messi”. Il Corriere analyzed all three candidates for this year’s award – Cristiano, Messi and Franck Ribéry. “Ronaldo is ahead of Messi in the race to win the Ballon d’Or despite the recent declarations of [FIFA President, Joseph] Blatter. CR7’s astonishing registry this term: 26 goals in 19 games including what could turn out to be a crucial strike for Portugal in the 2014 Brazil Play-Offs means that he has an advantage over the Barcelona star. At the same stage last season, Messi had scored 23 goals in his first 19 games,” the paper argued. The Rome-based daily concludes that the battle to lift the Ballon d’Or will be between Cristiano and Ribéry and noted that the Bayern Munich winger was equally as impressive during 2013 but may have lost ground on Cristiano after France’s 2-0 defeat in Ukraine in the World Cup Play-Offs.
