Critical reception for #flopAnjaan full negative !!!! Some reviews are very cute.... kullan can die now... :) :) nadippin naayakan alla....flopping naayakan kullan!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anjaan_(2014_film) Anjaan received mixed to negative reviews. Anupama Subramanian of the Deccan Chronicle gave 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, It is high voltage revenge drama seen in umpteen numbers of films, but what makes the film work is Suriya’s stunning charisma combined with his incredible performance and glossy packaging of Lingusamy with all commercial elements including action, glam quotient, romance, friendship, humor, sentiments, vengeance in a fitting manner.[94] R. S. Prakash from Bangalore Mirror wrote, With a wafer-thin theme that appears to be a blend of Rajinikanth films like Baasha and Thalapathy, Lingusamy appears to have lost his touch in churning out an effective script and hence the film struggles to move steadily right from the start, although he gave the film a rating of 3.5 out of 5.[95] Bollywood Life gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, This Independence Day treat from Lingusamy-Suriya combo is a must watch as the film packs all the elements of commercial cinema into an intriguing story which will leave you satisfied while you leave your seats.[96] Ramchander of Oneindia Entertainment gave 2.5 out of 5 and wrote, Suryas Anjaan is lengthy and it is just an average movie in the end.[97] Indiaglitz wrote, Anjaan would be in the list of movies that could have been etched better. Barring a few twists and turns, [it] does entertain Suriya fans to an extent and leaves out the rest and called the film a commercial entertainer [that] might not go beyond Suriyas fan base, while giving it 2.5 out of 5 stars.[98] Sify wrote, Anjaan tries its best to be a mass masala entertainer but falls short, due to inherent weakness in the script and execution. To a large extent the film is salvaged by Suriya’s charisma and star power.[99] M. Suganth of The Times of India gave 2 out of 5 and wrote, When a film announces loud and clear all that it wants to do is be in service of its hero, and make him as larger than life as possible, we accept it and all that we expect from it is to entertain us. But when it takes almost three hours to narrate its story with predictable twists and underwritten characters in a non-engaging fashion, it becomes a painful watch. And, Anjaan is just that.[100] Behindwoods rated the film 2 out of 5 and concluded, Suriya and Anjaan, [are] let down by the screenplay.[101] Haricharan Pudipeddi of IANS wrote, It is high time Lingusamy, who is reluctant to change, accepts the fact that age-old formula doesnt work anymore, and rated the film 2 out of 5.[102] S. Saraswathi of Rediff gave 2 out of 5 stars and concluded, Director Lingusamys attempt to recreate Superstars epic Baasha with good looking stars and technical brilliance fails miserably.[103] Malini Mannath from The New Indian Express wrote, The first thing that hits you as the movie unfolds is a sense of deja vu. The lazy screenplay and the amalgamation of incidents ripped from various films like Basha are a travesty. Suriya’s charismatic screen presence and the intensity with which he essays his role is the sole saving grace that holds the otherwise total-downer of a movie.[104] Baradwaj Rangan of The Hindu wrote, This is a dull, dull movie. Lingusamy unleashes the technical arsenal and fractures the narrative and expects us to follow a trail of clues as if this were a twisty noir nail-biter, but it’s no use because the story has all the suspense of a housewife shopping for vegetables.[105] Gautaman Bhaskaran of Hindustan Times gave 1 out of 5 stars and wrote, If director Lingusamy must understand that clichéd formulas like gangster dramas have limited appeal, actor Suriya must also realise that its about time he quit playing Superman and got down to earthy roles.[106] After receiving feedback regarding the length of the film, the films co-producer, G. Dhananjayan announced that the team had removed about 6 minutes from the second half of the film and had also deleted the comedy scenes featuring Brahmanandam, but retained the scenes in the dubbed Telugu version.[107][108] Further information from trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai revealed that the running time had been reduced to 2 hours and 30 minutes and theatres had begun screening the re-edited version, where about 9 minutes from the first half and 11 minutes from the second half were cut.[109] Suriya defended the film, citing that there had been a lot of negativity surrounding the film and was hurt by the fact that people (who were yet to see the film) also started deriding the film. He further requested people to refrain from personal deriding of the film.[110][111] Actor Vivek, after watching the trimmed version of the film, reacted to the feedback regarding the film by stating that the film was very sleek and entertaining. He also said that a film should not be condemned without any due reasons and insisted that the hard work of Anjaans team should be appreciated.[112] Actor Vijay Sethupathi also supported the film tweeting that it was good and worth watching.[113]
