Critics Accuse Insurers Of Restricting Benefits For Ill. The AP (8/18, Alonso-Zaldivar) reports on concerns of fresh barriers to coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, despite the Affordable Care Act’s intention to prevent such discrimination. Critics charge insurers with using selective medication coverage and narrow networks to deny access to healthcare to patients with certain conditions. More than 300 patients groups recently wrote to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell complaining that some health insurance companies “are highly discriminatory against patients with chronic health conditions and may ... violate the [ACA’s] nondiscrimination provisions.” HHS says it is preparing a response.
